West Valley Water District Partners with Smile America Abdi Foundation to Provide Thanksgiving Meals for Local Families

Rialto, Calif. – West Valley Water District (WVWD) partnered with the Smile America Abdi Foundation (SAAF), to assist with the distribution of meals to local families during its Annual Thanksgiving Drive event.

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, WVWD donated $2,500 to fund free holiday meals to over 125 families in Rialto during the November 19 event. Additionally, WVWD distributed water conservation items and activities to teach children about water conservation.

“Thanksgiving is a time of grace and service, and this event was the perfect opportunity to give back to our community,” said WVWD Board President Channing Hawkins. “We were thankful to work with Smile America Abdi Foundation to support our community.”

The Thanksgiving Drive was organized by the Smile America Abdi Foundation, a family service non-profit located in Rialto, that serves those affected by homelessness, hunger and poverty. Founded by Abdi Mohamed and now continued in his memory by his sister Farah Mohamed, the organization advocates on behalf of underserved Southern California communities.

“The Abdi Foundation was created by my brother to bring the community together in order to make it a better place for future generations and with West Valley Water district’s help, we are continuing that mission,” said Mohamed. “We are grateful to West Valley for their continued generosity and thank them for their time and support.”

The West Valley Water District has proudly served the Southern California communities of Bloomington, Colton, Fontana, Rialto, San Bernardino, and Jurupa Valley since 1952. Through name changes and consolidation, the mission has always remained the same: to provide customers with safe, high quality, and reliable water service at a reasonable rate and in a sustainable manner. The District provides water for about 98,000 customers and is overseen by a five-member, publicly elected Board of Directors.

Smile America Abdi Foundation is a family service non-profit in Rialto. Founded by Abdi Mohamed, a Somali refugee and local philanthropist who developed an affinity for helping, motivating and advocating on behalf of underserved Southern California communities. Sadly, Mohamed died in 2018 but, his sister, Farah Mohamad has chosen to continue her brother’s legacy of good works. The foundation relies on the support of volunteers and donors.
